Constellation
This installation work was a reflection of the experience of growing up Black in a small town on the prairies in the 1990s. One felt isolated, searching desperately to see myself in the world around oneself, importing symbols and archetypes from a peculiar array of influences, looking near and far to find a sense of self in family and pop culture. The faces you see were re-assembled from pieces of a ceiling mural uncovered under a barn in Southern Alberta; that mural has been reconstructed on the gallery wall. The stars in the work align with a view of the stars from that position in the gallery several years in the future, giving the work a predictive capacity.
